Welcon Technologies is pleased to achieve practical completion of the Biloela and Moura Water Treatment Plant upgrades for Banana Shire. These plants are key infrastructure assets for the Banana Region and were undertaken as a key partner with the Zinfra Team.

The electrical infrastructure at these plants had reached the end of their design life, needing full refurbishment. To improve water quality and dosing system control, the upgrades included an automation system of the entire Water Treatment Plants and the replacement of Main Switchboards and Motor Control Centres required to control the associated infrastructure. Each automation system will control up to six new dosing systems, which will ensure excellent water quality during any change in demand supply conditions.

There also is an offsite control system that can be monitored 24hrs a day, to provide rapid response to any plant alarms or trips.

The electrical systems at both plants also have the capability for fully automated emergency generators so the full plant can maintain operations should a loss of power occur or during major weather events like cyclone Marcia in 2015.

Extensive use has been made of variable speed drives in these installations, ensuring excellent process control but, more importantly, reduced energy consumption.

These towns can now be assured of better quality and more secure water supply in the area for years to come.
